Bulgaria Student Visa from Bangladesh 2027: Full Guide

Somewhere in a Dhaka consultancy office this month, a student is being told that Bulgaria is cheap, easy and that the file goes to "the Bulgarian embassy in Bangladesh." Two of those three things are true. The third one does not exist. Bulgaria has no functioning embassy in Bangladesh, and the country that quietly handles your Bulgaria student visa from Bangladesh is India.

That single fact reshapes the entire timeline, and it is the reason we wrote this guide. Bulgaria is genuinely one of the most affordable ways for a Bangladeshi family to put a child inside the European Union — tuition starts below EUR 2,000 a year, the country has been fully inside Schengen since January 2025, and since 1 January 2026 it pays in euros. But the route has a shape most local pages get wrong.

Does Bulgaria have an embassy in Bangladesh?

No. The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs states it plainly on its own Bangladesh country page, last updated 1 December 2025: "The Republic of Bulgaria does not have a functioning embassy in Bangladesh. The Embassy in Delhi, India is accredited for Bangladesh."

That embassy sits at 16/17 Chandragupta Marg, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi – 110021. Its consular section accepts applications Monday to Thursday, 10:00 to 15:00 local time, and hands back issued visas on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday between 12:00 and 13:00. There is a detail on that page worth circling in red: appointments are made only by e-mail, at [email protected]. There is no online booking portal, no walk-in queue and no agent shortcut.

The same MFA page carries a second fact that matters far more after you land than before you leave: the Embassy of Bangladesh in Bucharest, Romania is accredited to Bulgaria. If you are living in Sofia and need a passport renewal, a police clearance attestation or emergency consular help, your own country's mission is in another capital. Plan for it.

What is the Type D visa and how much does it cost?

Study in Bulgaria for longer than 90 days runs on the national long-stay visa, known as the Type D. The fee is set by the Bulgarian MFA's official consular fee schedule: EUR 100 for a long-stay visa under Article 15(1) of the Foreigners in the Republic of Bulgaria Act, which is the study category. A long-stay visa under Article 15(2) costs EUR 200, and an ordinary short-stay Schengen visa costs EUR 90.

The MFA adds a line in capital letters that we will repeat here, because students routinely assume otherwise: the charge is not refunded if the visa is refused. At roughly ৳144 to the euro in late August 2026, that is around ৳14,400 gone whichever way the decision falls — before flights to Delhi, before an Indian transit visa, before courier and translation costs.

ItemCost (EUR)Approx. BDT

Verify before you budget. Tuition bands come from the Foundation "Study in Bulgaria" portal, which is the official national study portal but still displays prices in Bulgarian Lev and carries a 2019 copyright line. Bulgarian tuition for foreign students is fixed annually by a Council of Ministers decree, usually in May, and each university publishes its own figure. Treat these as a planning range and confirm the exact fee with your chosen university in writing.

Why does the Ministry of Education have to approve you first?

This is the step that catches Bangladeshi students out, and it is nowhere on the competitor pages we read. In Bulgaria, you do not go from an offer letter straight to a visa appointment. There is a government body in between.

Your Bulgarian university collects your complete application file and forwards it to the Ministry of Education and Science (MES), Directorate "Higher Education." MES then issues a certificate of eligibility for study — the udostoverenie. Only once that certificate is in your hand can you apply for the Type D visa. Paisii Hilendarski University of Plovdiv, on its own non-EU admissions page updated 27 May 2025, states the ministry has a one-month deadline to issue it, and that the visa itself takes about a month after that, "but please bear in mind that sometimes it may take longer."

1
Apply to the university. Deadlines are earlier than students expect. Plovdiv University closes non-EU applications on 31 July; other institutions cluster between late August and 30 September. Applying in June rather than July is not caution, it is arithmetic.
2
University forwards your file to MES. You are not in control of this step and cannot speed it up. Budget one month.
3
Collect the MES eligibility certificate. It can be collected in person or by an authorised representative in Bulgaria.
4
E-mail the Bulgarian Embassy in New Delhi for an appointment. [email protected]. Build in time for the Indian visa you will need to physically get there.
5
Attend, submit, wait about a month, collect. Visas are handed back Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 12:00–13:00.
6
Enrol, then convert to residence. The Type D visa gets you in; a Bulgarian ID card issued after arrival is what lets you stay and study.

Can I use the VFS centre in Dhaka for a Bulgarian student visa?

Not for the study visa. VFS Global does run a Bulgaria service reachable from Bangladesh, and its own Bulgaria–Bangladesh information page lists short-stay categories in detail — tourist, business, medical, transit — with the visa fee shown as INR 9,000 plus INR 2,300 in VFS logistics charges, priced in Indian rupees with Indian GST. Under the Long Term Visa (Type D) heading, the same page says only this: "Applicants applying for a Long Term Visa have to apply directly at The Embassy/Consulate."

In October 2025 VFS Global and the Bulgarian Embassy in New Delhi announced long-term D visa centres across six Indian cities — Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi — opening from 1 November 2025. Read the announcement carefully and the Ambassador's own words frame it for "Indian citizens." A long-stay application is normally lodged in your country of permanent residence or at the mission accredited to it, which for a Bangladeshi passport holder means the New Delhi embassy itself. This is the single point we would ask any consultancy promising you a Dhaka submission to put in writing.

How do I get my HSC accepted — apostille or attestation?

Apostille, and Bulgaria accepts the electronic version. NACID's Bangladesh page specifies that the authenticity of your Higher Secondary Certificate is certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh through an electronic Apostille (e-Apostille), verifying the signature of the Controller of Examinations. Because the e-Apostille is visualisable through a QR code, NACID notes that the attached documents "may not be presented in the original."

Three specifics from that page are worth more than any general apostille explainer:

  • The Alim certificate counts. NACID names the Alim Examination alongside the HSC, so madrasah-stream students are explicitly inside the route.
  • A Provisional Pass Certificate is accepted where the HSC has not been officially issued yet — useful if you are applying in the same year you sat your exams.
  • Your results must match the public register. NACID verifies documents against educationboardresults.gov.bd and eboardresults.com, and warns applicants to check in advance "in order to avoid a refusal of recognition." A spelling variation between your certificate and the online record is a real refusal risk, not a technicality.

Documents then need translation into Bulgarian, with the translator's signature notarised in Bulgaria or certified at the Bulgarian Embassy. This is the part where a wrong translator costs a student six weeks — and it is exactly the kind of case-specific detail we work through file by file at Eduvisa rather than in a blog post.

How much can I work as a student in Bulgaria?

Twenty hours a week, and no separate work permit is needed. Bulgaria's rules exempt students from the special work permit requirement, but the exemption comes with a limit: students may work up to 20 hours a week during the academic year and during the official holidays of their university, and the employer must register the employment with the Employment Agency within seven days of the start date.

That last clause is the one students get wrong. The obligation sits with the employer, but the consequence sits with you — an unregistered job is an irregular job on your record when you apply to extend your residence. Ask before you accept.

Can I stay in Bulgaria after graduation?

Yes, for up to nine months, and there is a deadline inside it that is brutally short. Bulgarian law allows a graduate of full-time studies at a Bulgarian university to remain and look for work for nine months — but only if the graduate registers as a job seeker with the Employment Agency within seven working days of graduating. Miss the window and the nine months are not available. If your residence permit expires during the search period, the extension application should go in no later than 30 days before it lapses.

If no employer sponsors you by the end of the nine months, you leave. Bulgaria is not a soft settlement route, and any consultancy presenting it as one is overselling.

Flagged as unconfirmed. The nine-month job-search rule and the seven-working-day registration deadline come from Bulgarian legal-aid and migration advisory sources rather than a page we could open directly on the Employment Agency or Migration Directorate site. The 20-hour student work limit is sourced to the Foundation for Access to Rights migrant employment platform. Confirm both with the Migration Directorate or your university's international office before making a plan that depends on them.

Why is Bulgaria cheaper than the rest of the EU right now?

Because tuition is fixed by government decree rather than by market demand, and because the cost of living genuinely is low. The official study portal puts non-EU tuition at EUR 1,750–3,850 a year for most subjects, with medicine, veterinary medicine and pharmacy at EUR 4,000–7,700. Degrees taught in Bulgarian run roughly EUR 500 cheaper than the same degree taught in a foreign language — which is why the preparatory language year exists and why it can pay for itself.

On living costs, the same portal lists a monthly public transport pass at EUR 25, a one-bedroom flat outside the city centre at EUR 180, basic utilities around EUR 80 and internet at EUR 10. University dormitories are cheaper again. A disciplined student budget of EUR 400–450 a month is realistic — roughly ৳58,000–65,000.

Which Bulgarian universities can I actually apply to?

The Bulgarian MFA maintains a list of accredited institutions on its "Studying in Bulgaria" page, which is the safest starting point because it filters out the unaccredited operators that market aggressively overseas. Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", Technical University of Sofia, the University of National and World Economy, Plovdiv University "Paisii Hilendarski", Trakia University in Stara Zagora, New Bulgarian University and the American University in Blagoevgrad all appear on it, along with the Medical Universities of Sofia, Varna and Pleven for students targeting medicine.

Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna are the three cities where an international student cohort already exists — worth weighing if arriving into an established community matters to you.

What does Eduvisa see on files like this?

The pattern with lower-cost European destinations is consistent: students lose the intake not on eligibility but on sequencing. A Bulgaria file has four separate waiting periods stacked on top of each other — university assessment, one month at the Ministry of Education, an e-mail appointment queue in New Delhi, then about a month of visa processing — plus an Indian visa to physically attend. Students who start in June make September. Students who start in August are usually applying for the next intake without realising it yet. The other recurring issue is document mismatch: a name spelled one way on the HSC and another on the passport is a small thing in Dhaka and a refusal in Sofia.

A note on scope. This is blog research for Bangladeshi students, not a statement that Eduvisa currently processes Bulgaria applications. We publish these guides because students ask, and because there is very little accurate Bangladesh-specific information about Bulgaria online. Ask us directly what we do and do not process — we will tell you straight.
