There is a scholarship that pays a Bangladeshi student more than one lakh taka a month, waives every tuition and entrance fee, and puts a return air ticket in the envelope. It has existed for decades, the Japanese Embassy in Bangladesh publishes its own eligibility criteria in Bangladesh's own GPA system, and most students who would qualify never hear about it in time. That last part is the problem. MEXT runs almost two years ahead of the year you actually arrive in Japan, and the students who miss it are not rejected — they are late.
The Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship pays a monthly allowance of ¥143,000 to ¥145,000 depending on level, waives entrance-examination, matriculation and tuition fees, and provides economy-class air tickets both ways. Bangladeshi students apply through the Japanese Embassy in Bangladesh, which publishes its own criteria, and the cycle opens roughly two years before arrival.
How much does the MEXT scholarship actually pay?
The official Application Guidelines for the 2027 Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship for Research Students, published on the Japanese government's Study in Japan site, set three monthly rates: ¥143,000 for preparatory education and non-regular students, ¥144,000 for master's and professional-degree regular students, and ¥145,000 for doctoral regular students. Students placed in designated higher-cost regions receive a supplement of ¥2,000 or ¥3,000 a month on top.
Alongside the allowance, the guidelines state that "Fees for the entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition at universities are waivered", and MEXT provides economy-class airline tickets for the journey to Japan and home again on graduation. Domestic travel to and from the airport is the student's own cost.
The scholarship period for the 2027 cycle runs from April 2027 to March 2029 for April arrivals, or from September/October 2027 to March 2029 for October arrivals — and the first six months may be devoted to Japanese-language preparatory education if your proficiency is not yet sufficient.
Which MEXT categories can a Bangladeshi student apply for?
Five, according to the Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh's own scholarship notice. This is the part generic guides leave out, because the Embassy has translated MEXT's criteria into terms a Bangladeshi student actually recognises:
| Category | Age | Length | Key requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Research | Below 35 | Max 2 years incl. 6-month language training | First-class record, 60%+ or CGPA 3.5+ |
| Undergraduate | 17–25 | Normally 5 years incl. language training | GPA 4.5+ in SSC and HSC, A+ in core subjects |
| Teacher's Training | Under 35 | 6 months + 1 year master's level | 5 years' teaching experience |
| College of Technology | 17–25 | 3 years | GPA 5.0 and A+ in key subjects |
| Specialized Training College | 17–25 | Varies | 12 years of completed schooling |
Ages are counted as of 1 April. Note how specific the Embassy is about Bangladeshi grading — GPA 4.5 out of 5 in both SSC and HSC for the undergraduate track, and a clean GPA 5.0 for the College of Technology route. There is no ambiguity to argue with, and no point applying below it.
Read this before you rely on the table: the Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh's scholarship-details page carries a posting date of 5 October 2020. The criteria above are what that page publishes, and the age limits line up exactly with the current MEXT guidelines — but a six-year-old page can drift. Confirm each figure against the Embassy's advertisement for the cycle you are applying to before you commit. Figures read at source on 27 September 2026.
Do the Embassy's criteria still match MEXT's own rules?
On the one point we could cross-check, yes — and precisely. The Embassy says Research applicants must be "below 35 as of April 1". The official 2027 guidelines state that applicants "in principle, must have been born on or after April 2, 1992", which is exactly the same thing expressed as a birth date: someone born on 2 April 1992 turns 35 on 2 April 2027, so they are under 35 on 1 April 2027.
That is a small thing, but it matters for how much weight you give the rest of the Embassy page. The two documents were written six years apart and agree on the arithmetic.

When is the real application window?
Here is the fact that costs Bangladeshi students the most, and almost nobody states it plainly: MEXT's embassy-recommendation cycle opens roughly two years before you set foot in Japan.
The official 2027 screening schedule makes it concrete. Applications opened in mid-April 2026. First screening ran from early May to late July 2026. The deadline for university placement requests was 1 September 2026. Second-screening results land between January and March 2027 — and only then does the student travel, in April or October 2027.
The Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh describes the same rhythm in local terms: advertisement in April, application submission in May, and final selection by MEXT in December–January.
The 2027 cycle's applications were submitted in Bangladesh around April and May 2026. That window is gone. Your realistic target is the next cycle, advertised by the Embassy around April 2027 for arrival in 2028. This is not bad news if you hear it now — it is roughly six months of preparation time that most applicants never get. It is only bad news if you hear it in March.
| Stage | 2027 cycle | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Applications open | Mid-April 2026 | MEXT guidelines |
| First screening | Early May – late July 2026 | MEXT guidelines |
| Placement request deadline | 1 September 2026 | MEXT guidelines |
| Final results | January – March 2027 | MEXT guidelines |
| Bangladesh-specific dates, next cycle | Not yet advertised | No |
How much is the allowance worth in taka?
At the Wise mid-market rate of 1 JPY = 0.7787 BDT on 27 September 2026, the published rates convert as follows. The taka column is our arithmetic on Japan's yen figures:
| Level | Yen / month | Taka (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Preparatory / non-regular | ¥143,000 | ৳1,11,350 |
| Master's / professional degree | ¥144,000 | ৳1,12,130 |
| Doctoral | ¥145,000 | ৳1,12,910 |
| Regional supplement, upper | ¥3,000 | ৳2,340 |
Two honest caveats on that number. Japan is not cheap, and Tokyo rent will take a serious share of it — this is a living allowance, not a salary, and unlike some scholarships it does not come with a free dormitory room as standard. But because tuition and entrance fees are waived and both flights are covered, the allowance is not being asked to do the impossible. It is one of the few fully funded packages where a Bangladeshi student can genuinely support themselves without a part-time job in the first year.
Do you need Japanese to apply?
No — but you need to be willing to learn it. The guidelines put it directly: applicants "must be willing to learn Japanese", and those whose proficiency is insufficient may receive six months of preparatory education before the degree begins. For the undergraduate and College of Technology tracks, the Embassy's own description builds language training into the programme length: five years "including Japanese-language training" for undergraduates.
A five-year undergraduate programme where one year is language study is not a slower degree — it is a funded year of immersion that a self-paying student could never afford separately. Budget your life plan around the real length, though. A family expecting a graduate back in four years should be told it is five.
Does a Bangladeshi apostille work for Japan?
Yes. Japan has been a party to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention since 27 July 1970, Bangladesh's own accession took effect on 30 March 2025, and Japan is not among the twelve contracting parties that objected to it. So a single apostille from the competent Bangladeshi authority is the recognised route for certificates and transcripts, rather than the older chain of attestation followed by embassy legalisation.
Entry-into-force dates were read on the HCCH Apostille status table on 27 September 2026; the objection list was read on the HCCH notifications register on 25 September 2026. The Embassy may still specify its own format for documents submitted with an application, so follow the advertisement for your cycle.
What should you be doing now?
- Apostilled SSC, HSC and degree certificates with full transcripts
- Grade conversion or explanation where your institution uses an unusual scale
- Field-of-study and research plan, written for named Japanese institutions
- Recommendation letter from your current or most recent institution
- Medical certificate on the prescribed form
- Evidence of any Japanese or English language study
- Abstracts of any published work, for research applicants
- Whatever additional documents the Embassy's own advertisement lists for your category
What does MEXT not cover?
Your passport and police clearance in Bangladesh. The apostille fees. Domestic travel at either end. The student visa, which is a separate immigration process even for a scholarship holder. Accommodation is not automatically free — the allowance is expected to cover it. And the first weeks in Japan, before the allowance cycle begins, are on you.
MEXT's embassy-recommendation application is free. There is no fee to be advertised, screened or selected. Anyone charging you for access to the MEXT application in Bangladesh is charging for something the Japanese government provides at no cost. Paying someone to assess whether you clear the grade bar, and to get your documents right, is a different thing entirely.
What we see at Eduvisa
The students who lose MEXT are almost never the ones who fall short on grades. They are the ones who hear about it in June, after the May submission window has closed, and then wait a year with nothing prepared — and often miss the next one too, because nobody told them the advertisement comes in April. Timing, on this scholarship, is the whole skill. When a student walks in with a GPA 5.0 and eighteen months of runway, our job is mostly to make sure they do not waste it.
