Japan Student Visa from Bangladesh 2027: Fees & Embassy Rules

He had the Certificate of Eligibility. He had the admission letter, the bank statements, the tax papers, all of it in a plastic folder his mother had ironed flat the night before. He reached the Embassy gate in Baridhara at ten past twelve and was politely told to come back another day. Nobody had told him that the Japan student visa counter in Bangladesh closes its submission window at 11:30 in the morning.

That is the strange thing about the Japan student visa from Bangladesh in 2027. Japan is one of the cheapest study destinations a Bangladeshi student can apply to on paper — the Embassy's own visa page says there is no fee for Bangladeshi nationals — and one of the least forgiving in practice. The cost is not in money. It is in getting one morning exactly right.

How much does the Japan student visa cost from Bangladesh?

According to the Embassy of Japan's own visa information page, the answer is nothing: under the heading "Fee" it states plainly, "No fee for Bangladesh national. Other national, ask the Embassy." For a family comparing destinations, that single line is worth reading twice. A UK student visa costs £558 before the health surcharge. Germany charges a visa fee and asks for roughly €11,904 blocked in a German account before it will look at you. Japan asks for none of that at the counter.

What Japan asks for instead is money paid earlier, to the school. Your Certificate of Eligibility is applied for in Japan by the institution that admitted you, and language schools in particular expect tuition or a substantial deposit before they will file it. So the visa is free, but the year is not — and the money moves months before the Embassy ever sees your file.

What happens on the day you apply at the Embassy in Baridhara?

Everything happens in one visit, and the visit is short. The Embassy's published procedure sets submission hours at 09:30 to 11:30 on every working day, by the applicant — not by a parent, not by an agent. The interview is held at the same time as your submission; there is no second appointment to prepare for. At the end you are given an application receipt, and your passport and original documents come back between 14:30 and 15:30 on the day you are told.

The Embassy's working week runs Sunday to Thursday, with office hours 9:00 to 17:00 and a lunch break from 12:30 to 13:30. If you send someone else to collect the passport, they need the application receipt plus an authorisation carrying your valid signature. And the Embassy is explicit that an application with incomplete documents will not be accepted at all — it is not held, not pended, not fixed later.

What is a Certificate of Eligibility, and who actually applies for it?

This is where most Bangladeshi families lose time. The Certificate of Eligibility is not something you apply for at the Embassy. It is issued in Japan by the immigration authorities, and the school applies for it on your behalf after admitting you. Only once the COE exists — and reaches you — does the visa application in Bangladesh begin.

Two practical details from the Embassy's document rules save real trouble here. First, the COE may be submitted as a photocopy. Second, documents issued in Japan — the COE, the letter of admission, fee receipts, JLPT or NAT-TEST results — do not need notarisation, while Bangladeshi documents you cannot submit in original must be submitted as notarised copies. Photocopies must be on A4 paper, and nothing you submit is returned.

One morning, four fixed points — and one rule that costs six months if you get it wrong.

Which document list applies to you — university or language school?

The Embassy publishes two separate lists, and they are not equally demanding. If you are going to a college or university, the list is short and academic. If you are going to a Japanese language school — which is how a large share of Bangladeshi students actually enter Japan — the list turns into a financial examination of the person paying for you.

Read the third and fifth rows again. A language-school applicant whose uncle is paying must produce that uncle's tax certificates and payment receipts for three years, plus a family tree with NID or Nikahnama evidence proving the relationship. Families routinely start assembling this two weeks before travel. Three years of tax records cannot be assembled in two weeks.

How do you fill the form so it is not rejected at the counter?

The Embassy publishes a guideline page written, visibly, for Bangladeshi applicants — the worked example it gives is the name "MD Shafiqul Khan". Three of its instructions cause more counter problems than anything else:

  1. Split the name the way the Embassy splits it. For "MD Shafiqul Khan", the surname is "Khan" and the given and middle name is "MD Shafiqul". No titles — no Mr., Mrs. or Dr. in the name box. If your passport uses initials, your full name goes in the "different name used" box.
  2. Give a real address, not a locality. The guideline says do not write only "Gulshan 2, Dhaka". House number, road number, plot number are expected. Where there is no such numbering, give the covering police station, post office and public office names.
  3. Be specific about occupation and purpose. Not "Business", not "Student" — the Embassy wants "University student (2nd year)", "College student (HSC)", "Medicine businessman". Purpose must name a visa category, not "Visit" or "Travel".

Answer every question. Where a question does not apply, the Embassy asks for "none", "nil" or "N/A" rather than a blank. And you sign your own form — the Embassy states applicants are personally responsible for every answer even if somebody else filled it in.

Verify before you go: the Embassy's site carries pages from two different eras. One page specifies a photo of 2 inch × 2 inch taken within six months; another specifies 2 inch × 1.4 inch. We could not reconcile them, and the fee and procedure page is not dated. Telephone the Consular and Visa Section on the number published on the Embassy site and confirm the photo size, the current submission hours and the fee position before you travel to Baridhara. Do not act on this article, or any article, for a step that costs you a day at a gate.

What does a year in Japan actually cost in taka?

Japan's official Study in Japan portal, drawing on JASSO's Lifestyle Survey of Privately-Financed International Students, puts the average monthly living cost at ¥105,000, excluding study costs. Housing averages ¥41,000 nationally and ¥57,000 in Tokyo. At ৳0.771 to the yen on 15 August 2026, that average month is roughly ৳81,000 — call it ৳9.7 lakh a year before a single tuition instalment.

Private university, first year1.1m–1.64m৳8.5–12.6 lakhGuide figure
Language school, one year600,000–997,400৳4.6–7.7 lakhGuide figure

Two honest caveats. The tuition figures come from the official Student Guide to Japan fee tables, which are useful for shape but are not this year's prices — check the actual school. And the long-standing national university standard of ¥535,800 is no longer universal: the University of Tokyo raised undergraduate tuition to ¥642,960, its first increase in two decades, and national universities are permitted to charge above the standard rate. Budget from the school's own fee page, not from a national average.

Can you work part-time in Japan, and for how many hours?

Yes, but only after permission. A student in Japan must obtain Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted Under the Status of Residence before taking any paid work. With it, degree students may work up to 28 hours a week, rising to about 8 hours a day during the school's long vacations; research and auditing students are limited to roughly 14 hours. Working without the permission is illegal and puts your status at risk. These limits are widely reported by Japanese universities and immigration specialists; confirm the current figure with your institution's international office.

How does a Bangladeshi student get the MEXT scholarship?

Through the Ministry of Education in Bangladesh, which is the part almost every blog leaves out. The Embassy publishes the Embassy Recommendation schedule: the advertisement appears on the Bangladesh Ministry of Education website in April, applications go to the Ministry in May, written examination and interview follow in June and July, the Embassy makes a provisional selection in July, MEXT in Japan makes the final selection between December and January, and departure is in April or October of the following year.

That is roughly an eighteen-month runway. The undergraduate category asks for age 17–25 and, for science and engineering, GPA 5 in both SSC and HSC with A+ in English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry; humanities asks GPA 4.5 in both with A+ in English and Mathematics. The research category is for applicants under 35 with a first class or CGPA 3.5 out of 4. Every category has a written examination that includes Japanese.

The Embassy's scholarship detail page carries a 2020 date stamp. Treat the categories and the shape of the schedule as reliable, and the exact months and grade thresholds as things to re-confirm against the current year's advertisement on the Ministry of Education website before you plan around them.

What we see at Eduvisa

Three patterns repeat with Japan files, and none of them are about intelligence. The first is the supporter problem: a student picks a language school in March for an October start, and only in July discovers that the uncle funding him has three years of tax records that do not exist in the form the Embassy wants. The second is the calendar problem: families treat the COE as the finish line, when it is the starting gun for a submission window that is two hours long. The third is the quietest — a student who was refused once, applies again six weeks later on new advice, and is turned away without the file being read.

None of these are solved by reading a list. They are solved by looking at the actual supporter, the actual documents and the actual intake date, months earlier than feels necessary. That is the part we do sitting across a table from you.

  • Confirm your school in Japan is applying for the COE, and get the expected date in writing.
  • Decide now who the financial supporter is — and check whether three years of tax certificates and receipts exist in that person's name.
  • If the supporter is not a parent, start the family tree, NID and Nikahnama evidence early.
  • Telephone the Consular and Visa Section to confirm photo size, hours and fee before you travel.
  • Plan to arrive at Baridhara well before 11:30, with the applicant present in person.
  • Ask any language school, in writing, about its MEXT accreditation status.
  • Never submit an incomplete file "to save time" — it will not be accepted, and a refusal costs six months.
