Every March, a quiet window opens in Putrajaya — and most Bangladeshi students miss it. The Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS), the Malaysian government's flagship award, accepted applications for barely a month this year, then closed until the next cycle. Meanwhile, thousands of students in Bangladesh assume that scholarships in Malaysia are either fake agent promises or reserved for straight-A prodigies. Neither is true. Scholarships in Malaysia for Bangladeshi students in 2027 are real, well-documented, and — if you plan around the right calendar — very winnable. This guide walks through what actually exists, what it pays, and how to time your 2027 intake application so funding and admission line up.
Bangladeshi students can target two main scholarship routes in Malaysia for 2027: the government's Malaysia International Scholarship (full tuition plus RM1,500/month, postgraduate only, Bangladesh eligible as a Commonwealth country) and university merit awards of roughly 10–50% off tuition at private universities such as APU, Taylor's and Sunway — plus rare full-ride options like Albukhary International University.
Can Bangladeshi students really get scholarships in Malaysia?
Yes — scholarships in Malaysia for Bangladeshi students exist at both government and university level, and Bangladesh appears in the government's own eligibility framework. The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) guidelines for the Malaysia International Scholarship list Commonwealth countries among the recipient countries, and Bangladesh is a Commonwealth member. What we see at Eduvisa, though, is that most applicants from Bangladesh hear about these awards after the window has closed. The money is real; the calendar is unforgiving. That is the single most important thing to understand before we go further.
The honest picture also has limits. Malaysia does not run a broad government scholarship for international undergraduates — the flagship MIS is postgraduate only. Undergraduate funding comes almost entirely from the universities themselves, as merit-based tuition discounts. Both routes are covered below.
What is the Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS) and what does it pay?
MIS is the Malaysian government's award for international master's and PhD students, run by MOHE. According to the official MIS 2026 guidelines, it pays your full tuition fees directly to the university for the entire sponsorship period, plus a living allowance of RM1,500 per month — around ৳45,000 at current rates. The allowance is paid every four months against a progress report.
Full-time master's or PhD only • 24 supported institutions — 20 public universities (UM, USM, UKM, UPM, UTM, IIUM and others) plus UTP, UNITEN, MMU and INCEIF • Priority fields include engineering, ICT, business, sciences, education and agriculture — but medicine, nursing and pharmacy are excluded • Paid employment during the scholarship is not allowed without written approval.
One more thing the guidelines say plainly: the scholarship does not guarantee a visa. You still complete the normal EMGS student-pass process from Bangladesh — a point where we see even scholarship winners stumble on documentation.
Who is eligible for MIS in the 2027 cycle?
The core criteria from the official guidelines are strict but transparent. You need a CGPA of 3.00 (or Second Class Upper) at bachelor's level for a master's application — the same 3.00 standard applies at master's level for PhD applicants. Age limits are 40 for master's and 45 for PhD at the time of application. English requirements: IELTS 6.0 or higher, TOEFL PBT 550, or an official letter confirming your previous degree was taught in English — a route many Bangladeshi private-university graduates can use.
- Certified passport copy (minimum 6 months validity)
- Certified transcripts of all previous study — with an official grading-system letter if your transcript does not show CGPA
- IELTS/TOEFL result or English-medium-of-instruction letter
- Two letters of recommendation
- CV, and admission letter if you already hold one
- Research proposal of at least 1,000 words (research-mode master's and PhD only)
Selection favours strong academics, a research proposal with clear contribution — the guidelines note a preference for Malaysia-related research topics — and confident English. That research proposal is where applications are won and lost.

What scholarships can undergraduate students from Bangladesh get?
For bachelor's study, the realistic route is university merit awards — automatic tuition discounts based on your HSC, O-Level/A-Level or equivalent results. These are not shadowy agent deals; the better universities publish their scales. Asia Pacific University (APU), for example, publishes an official merit table for international students: 30% off for AAA at A-Level or 9 As at O-Level/IGCSE, 20% for AAB or 8 As, 10% for ABB or 6–7 As, renewable each year if you keep a CGPA of 2.50. The current cycle's deadline is 31 July 2026, and awards are first-come, first-served.
Across private universities such as Taylor's, Sunway and UCSI, advertised merit scholarships commonly run from 20% to 50% of tuition, with full 100% awards reserved for genuinely exceptional candidates. The fine print varies — some cover first year only, others the full programme. Then there is the outlier: Albukhary International University in Kedah, which offers fully funded undergraduate places — tuition, accommodation and meals — aimed at academically strong students with financial need. Reports of extras like stipends and flights vary by source, so treat the details as something to confirm directly before you count on them.

When should you apply for a 2027 intake?
Malaysian universities run three main intakes — January, May and September 2027 — and scholarship calendars sit on top of them. The MIS window for the 2026/27 year ran roughly March to early April 2026, with interview shortlists announced in July. If the pattern holds, expect the next MIS window in early 2027 — which means your admission groundwork happens in late 2026. That timing estimate is ours, not MOHE's; the official portal announces each cycle.
At roughly ৳30 per ringgit (indicative July 2026 rate — it moves daily), the MIS allowance of RM1,500/month is about ৳45,000. A 30% merit discount on a RM90,000 private degree saves around RM27,000 — roughly ৳8 lakh over the programme. Even a 10% award is real money.
What mistakes cost Bangladeshi applicants their scholarship?
The same few errors appear again and again in the files we review at Eduvisa. First: chasing "guaranteed scholarship" promises from agents — no legitimate Malaysian award is guaranteed, and universities decide merit discounts from your certificates, not an agent's influence. Second: missing the FCFS clock — merit budgets run out, and late July applicants can find the pool empty. Third: submitting uncertified copies or transcripts without a grading-scale letter, which the MIS guidelines explicitly require when CGPA isn't shown. Fourth: assuming a scholarship changes visa rules. It doesn't — and remember that on MIS you cannot take paid work without written approval, so budget honestly.
Malaysia's Graduate Pass post-study scheme currently does not include Bangladesh on its eligible-country list. A Malaysian degree still opens doors — but plan your after-graduation route with clear eyes, not assumptions. Ask us what pathways actually apply to your case.
How does Eduvisa help you actually win one?
What we see at Eduvisa, across the Malaysia files we handle from Bangladesh, is that scholarship outcomes are decided months before the deadline — in the CGPA conversion letter nobody told the student to request, the research proposal drafted in a rush, the merit application submitted three weeks too late. Our team matches your actual results to the awards you can genuinely win, prepares the certified document set, and times admission and scholarship applications so they land together — then stays with you through EMGS, arrival and settling in. The information above is free; the case-by-case strategy is what you come in for.
