Romania Student Visa from Bangladesh 2027: Full Guide

Every few weeks a student walks into our office holding a printout about Romania and says some version of the same sentence: "Romania is in Schengen now, so once I get the visa I can move around Europe." It is an understandable thing to believe. It is also, according to Romania's own Ministry of Education portal, wrong — and believing it is one of the more expensive mistakes a Bangladeshi student can make.

If you are researching the Romania student visa from Bangladesh for a 2027 intake, this guide walks through what the Romanian government actually publishes: where your file goes, why the Letter of Acceptance controls your whole timeline, how much money you must show, and what that Schengen membership really buys you.

What is the Romania student visa from Bangladesh, and who needs one?

It is called a long-stay visa for studies and it is marked D/SD. You need it if your studies in Romania will involve more than 90 consecutive days of uninterrupted stay — which covers essentially every bachelor's, master's and PhD programme.

Romania's official visa guidance, published by UEFISCDI (the government agency that funds higher education and research), states plainly that nationals of all third states need a D/SD visa with only three exceptions: Canada, the United States of America and Japan. Bangladesh is not on that exemption list, so a Bangladeshi passport holder applies like everyone else.

The same guidance sets out the basics of the travel document itself. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the visa you are applying for, must have been issued no more than ten years ago, and must have at least two blank pages for the visa sticker. You will also need two recent colour photographs at 3 × 4 cm — note that this is not the 3.5 × 4.5 cm size several other European missions ask for, so photographs taken for a different country's file may not be reusable.

Where does a Bangladeshi student actually lodge the file?

This is the first thing to get straight, because it shapes your costs and your calendar. Romania does not currently run a visa-issuing embassy in Bangladesh. There is an Honorary Consulate of Romania in Dhaka, but honorary consulates typically do not decide visas.

In April 2023 Romanian authorities announced that the temporary Romanian office in Dhaka had been relocated to the Romanian Embassy in New Delhi, which would continue to handle visa applications for Bangladeshi citizens. That New Delhi mission is the one whose student-visa instructions Bangladeshi applicants are pointed to.

The application itself is lodged electronically. Romania's guidance is unusually blunt about this: applicants must apply through the eVisa portal at evisa.mae.ro, and it repeats that there is no other way to obtain an appointment for lodging a visa application. The electronic file is then physically lodged at the diplomatic mission with territorial competency for the country where you are legally present.

What is the Letter of Acceptance, and why does it control your timeline?

In most countries the university admits you and that is that. Romania adds a government layer, and it is the single biggest reason Romanian applications run late.

According to the Ministry of Education's Study in Romania portal, the sequence for non-EU students runs like this. You apply to your chosen university and, typically after about 15 days, you receive a preliminary decision. The university then submits your admission file to the Ministry of Education. The Ministry's own processing takes a minimum of 30 days and up to 60 days. If the Ministry reaches a positive decision, it issues the Letter of Acceptance and sends it to the university and, where relevant, to the diplomatic mission.

There is a detail on that page that surprises most students: if the institution you applied to cannot honour your request, the Ministry of Education can suggest another university according to your profile, preferences and availability at the time. You are not necessarily refused — you may be redirected.

Stack the stages honestly and the arithmetic becomes obvious. Roughly 15 days for a university decision, then up to 60 days at the Ministry, then a visa file that has a 60-day legal decision term of its own. That is why a student who starts in June for an autumn intake is already behind.

Count backwards from your intake date: roughly 15 days for the university decision, up to 60 at the Ministry of Education, then a 60-day legal term for the visa itself.

What documents does the D/SD visa file need?

Beyond the application form, passport, photographs and fee, Romania's published visa guidance lists the following for a studies file.

  • Proof of acceptance for studies issued by the Romanian Ministry of Education, attesting that you will attend a full-time course at an accredited or provisionally authorised institution
  • Proof of payment of the tuition fee for at least one academic year
  • Proof of means of support at the level of the minimum guaranteed monthly gross salary, for the entire period specified in the visa
  • A criminal record certificate, or a document of equivalent legal value
  • Travel medical insurance covering the whole requested stay, with coverage of at least EUR 30,000
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Proof of knowledge of the language of the study programme (the exception is the preparatory year of Romanian language)
  • Consent of parents or legal guardian, if you are under 18

Every document is submitted in original and in copy when you attend your appointment. Consular officers may also ask for additional documents if they think it necessary.

What do the New Delhi mission's own instructions add?

The mission that handles Bangladeshi files publishes several practical rules that generic study-abroad sites do not carry, and they are exactly the kind of details that sink an otherwise good application.

Verify before you act. The New Delhi mission's student-visa page would not load for us on 22 August 2026 — the mae.ro site returned an empty page to our tools — so the three rules above were read from search-engine records of that page rather than from the live page itself. They are consistent across sources, but consular checklists change without notice. Confirm the current wording on the mission's own site, and confirm whether the Medium of Instruction restriction applies to Bangladeshi applicants specifically, before you build a file around it.

How much money do you have to show, and in whose bank?

Romania states the requirement as a formula rather than a single number, which is why you will see different figures quoted online. The visa guidance requires means of support "at the level of the minimum guaranteed monthly gross salary, for the entire period specified in the visa."

So you need to know the minimum wage. Romania's gross minimum wage was RON 4,050, and by Government Decision No. 146/2026 it rose to RON 4,325 per month from July 2026 — just under EUR 850. Separately, the Study in Romania portal's admission steps mention proof of financial means of at least EUR 2,000, which is broadly what a few months of that minimum wage works out to for an initial visa period.

One more precision point worth knowing before you renew anything: at the visa stage the benchmark is the minimum gross wage, but the residence-permit extension page sets the benchmark at the minimum national net wage per month for the entire validity of the permit. Different stage, different number.

Conversions use 1 EUR = ৳142.72 and 1 RON = ৳27.17 as of 22 August 2026. Rates move daily, so treat the taka column as indicative. The tuition rows are drawn from secondary sources and university fee pages rather than a single government table — the only figure that matters for your file is the one your own university invoices you.

Does a Romanian visa let you travel around Schengen?

No — and this is the myth worth spending a paragraph on, because it drives real decisions and real spending.

Romania did formally become a full member of the Schengen Area on 1 January 2025, and internal land-border checks with other Schengen countries were abolished. But the Ministry of Education's residence-permit page states the position for students in terms that leave no room for interpretation: a Romanian long-stay visa allows you to enter Romania only, and it does not grant the right to travel or reside in other Schengen or EU countries. Once you are in Romania, you must apply for a residence permit from the Romanian General Inspectorate for Immigration.

Read that carefully. The document in your passport when you land is an entry permission for one country. The rights that come later come from the residence permit, not from the visa sticker. Anyone selling you Romania as a side door into Western Europe is selling you something the Romanian government does not describe that way.

What happens in your first 30 days in Romania?

The visa gets you in. The residence permit lets you stay, and the clock is short.

  1. Arrive prepared for questions. The Study in Romania portal warns that border control at airports is strict, with a visa check and possible questions about your income and accommodation in Romania.
  2. Complete your university enrolment. The residence permit application follows enrolment, not the other way round.
  3. Go to the IGI territorial office within your first 30 days. Romania's visa guidance is specific that you must address the territorial bureau of the General Inspectorate for Immigration throughout the first 30 days from the date of entry.
  4. Bring the full file. Application form, passport in original and copy, the Letter of Acceptance (requested only at the first extension), a certificate from your education institution, proof of means of subsistence, proof of legal right over your dwelling space, a medical certificate, and the fees.
  5. Renew every year. The student residence permit is valid for one year and must be renewed annually. Scholarship holders are usually issued a permit for the total duration of their studies.

If you later want to change your study profile or specialisation, that is allowed provided the total duration of the initial studies is not exceeded. If the new programme needs longer, a fresh long-stay study visa is required.

Can you work while you study in Romania?

You can — but here we have to be honest about something the Romanian government has not made clear, and we would rather tell you than let you plan a budget on it.

Two pages on the same official Study in Romania website give different answers. The Working FAQ says international students do not require a work permit as long as they hold a student residence permit, and that students are allowed to work six hours a day. The residence-permit page says that if you hold a student residence permit you can be employed only part-time at four hours a day, and that for this you must obtain a work permit.

What we see at Eduvisa when Bangladeshi students look at Romania

We should say plainly that Romania is newer research for us than Malta, Italy, the UK, Malaysia or Cyprus, where our team handles files routinely. We are publishing this because Bangladeshi students are asking about budget European destinations and deserve accurate information rather than recycled marketing copy.

What we can say from the European files we do handle every week is that the failure pattern is almost always the same, and Romania has all three ingredients for it. First, a government processing step that students underestimate — here, the 30-to-60-day Ministry stage before the visa file even opens. Second, a documentary rule about who produces a document rather than what it says — here, a bank statement that must come from the bank's own email domain. Third, a jurisdiction that is not in Dhaka, which turns every correction into a delay measured in weeks rather than days.

Students who succeed in files like this are the ones who start early, treat every checklist line as literal, and get a second pair of eyes on the file before submission. That last part is the bit we do.

Please verify before applying. Visa fees, minimum-wage benchmarks, tuition figures and consular checklists change, sometimes mid-cycle. Every official figure above was checked on 22 August 2026 against Romanian government sources; the tuition ranges and the 2023 interview announcement are drawn from secondary sources and are labelled as such. Nothing here is a substitute for confirming your own case with the Romanian Embassy in New Delhi and your university.

Thinking about Romania for 2027?

Romania rewards students who start early and get the paperwork exactly right — and it punishes the ones who find out about the Ministry stage in July. Come and talk to us before you commit to a university or pay a tuition instalment. We will look at your academic profile, your funding picture and your timeline honestly, and tell you whether Romania is the right fit or whether one of our established destinations serves you better. And if you do go, we stay with you after you land — that is the part most consultancies skip.
