A student walks into an office in Dhaka with a Hungarian offer letter and a number in his head: tuition is about USD 6,000 a year, so one year's fee is what the family needs to arrange. He is wrong by half a year's fee — not because anyone lied to him, but because the university's own website carries a rule that applies specifically to Bangladeshi passport holders, and almost nobody reads that far down the page.
To study in Hungary from Bangladesh in 2027 there are two very different routes. The Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship covers tuition, pays a monthly stipend and is nominated through Bangladesh's Ministry of Education. If you go self-funded, expect to pay tuition before the university issues visa documents — and at least one major university requires Bangladeshi citizens to pay 1.5 years' fees up front.
Why are Bangladeshi students suddenly looking at Hungary?
Because the traditional destinations got harder and more expensive at the same time, and Hungary sits in the European Union with English-taught degrees at a fraction of British or Dutch tuition. Consultancies across Dhaka have noticed: several of the firms that used to sell only UK and Australia now run "Study in Europe" desks, and Hungary appears on almost all of them.
What those pages rarely say is that Hungary is two different propositions depending on how you pay. On a government scholarship it is one of the cheapest ways a Bangladeshi student can hold an EU degree. Self-funded, it carries a cash-flow demand at the start that has caught families badly off guard. This guide covers both honestly, because choosing the wrong one wastes a year.
What does the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship actually cover?
It is a Hungarian government scholarship programme, and for the 2026/27 cycle roughly 30 Hungarian higher education institutions offered about 900 programmes taught in foreign languages, mostly English. For scholarship holders the package reported by the programme covers tuition in full, pays a monthly stipend of HUF 43,700 for bachelor's and master's students across 12 months of the year, gives either a free dormitory place or a contribution of HUF 40,000 a month toward accommodation, and adds medical insurance including supplementary cover up to HUF 65,000 a year.
Read the stipend honestly. HUF 43,700 is roughly ৳17,000 a month at today's rate — real help, not a salary. Students still budget for food, transport and books beyond it, and most treat the free dormitory as the part that makes the sums work.
| Benefit | Amount | Approx. BDT | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition | Fully covered | — | Programme-stated |
| Monthly stipend | HUF 43,700 | ৳17,050 | Programme-stated |

| Insurance top-up | Up to HUF 65,000/yr | ৳25,400 | Check current call |

How does a Bangladeshi student apply for Stipendium Hungaricum?
This is where Bangladesh differs from what international blogs describe, and it is the single most useful thing on this page. The scholarship runs on a country-nomination model: your government nominates candidates, so an online application on the Hungarian portal alone is not the whole process for a Bangladeshi applicant.
For the 2026/27 round, the Secondary and Higher Education Division of Bangladesh's Ministry of Education published the call on its own website on 15 January 2026, linking to the Hungarian application portal — and its notice carried a Bangla instruction that the hard copy of the online application had to be dropped into the box in the reception room beside Gate No. 2 of the Secretariat, by 5:00 p.m. on the stated date. A student who completed the Hungarian online form and stopped there would have missed the Bangladeshi half of the process entirely.
The Hungarian portal deadline and the Bangladesh Ministry hard-copy deadline are two different deadlines, and the Ministry's is usually the tighter one. Watch shed.gov.bd from around late December, not just the Hungarian site. Miss the Secretariat drop-off and the online application does not save you — the next chance is a year away.
For 2026/27 the Hungarian portal deadline was 15 January 2026 at 2:00 p.m. Central European Time. The 2027/28 round has not been published at the time of writing, so treat a similar mid-January date as a planning assumption and confirm both deadlines when the Ministry notice appears.

What is the 1.5-year tuition rule for Bangladeshi citizens?
The University of Debrecen, one of Hungary's largest hosts of international students, publishes a policy on its own admissions site under the heading "Special regulations for Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Afghan, Syrian, Burmese and Yemeni citizens". Its stated purpose is to remove administrative difficulties the university experienced with applicants from those countries.
The substance, effective from September 2025: where a programme's tuition is under USD 10,000, students of those nationalities must pay 1.5 years of tuition before the university issues the visa supporting documents. For preparatory courses, the required payment is the preparatory fee plus the following year's first semester or first year of the chosen undergraduate programme, again totalling one and a half years of fees.
The money is not lost. After successfully completing the first semester — defined as holding active student status and obtaining a signature in at least one subject — the overpayment may be credited toward the following year's tuition. Students whose academic performance is above the average of their year group may request a refund of the amount paid beyond the annual fee.
On a programme charging around USD 6,000 a year, one and a half years is roughly USD 9,000 — about ৳11 lakh at today's rate — payable before you receive the papers you need to apply for the visa. Not after admission. Not in instalments across the year. Plan the family's cash flow around that number, and remember it buys you nothing extra: it is your own future tuition, held early.
One caution: this is one named university's policy, published on its own site. Other Hungarian institutions set their own rules and may not have this requirement at all. Never assume it applies everywhere, and never assume it does not apply to the university you are actually applying to — read that specific institution's admissions page before you transfer anything.
Where is a Hungarian student visa decided for a Bangladeshi applicant?
Not in Dhaka, on the information available to us. Hungary has no student-visa decision office in Bangladesh; applicants typically lodge biometrics and documents through a visa application centre in Dhaka while the competent Hungarian mission — the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi — takes the decision. We could not confirm this against a Hungarian government page during this research, so treat it as unconfirmed and check with the mission before you plan travel or pay non-refundable fees.
Two things are confirmed from the University of Debrecen's own guidance. The study visa is a D-type visa that can only be obtained in your country of origin or at the Hungarian embassy nearest your residence — it cannot be arranged after arriving in Hungary. And the earliest you may book the visa appointment is 90 days before entering Hungary, which sets the outer edge of your timeline.
If a New Delhi decision point sounds familiar, it should: Cyprus works the same way for Bangladeshi students. Families who have been through that route already understand the courier timelines and the waiting.
What happens after you land in Hungary?
The D visa gets you in; a residence permit lets you stay. You apply for the residence permit after arrival by giving biometric data and any outstanding documents, and since 1 July 2023 most immigration tasks — extending the permit, changing your registered accommodation — are handled online through Hungary's National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing rather than over a counter.
Build the first fortnight around that, exactly as you would in Italy or Cyprus. The pattern repeats across Europe: the visa is the beginning of the paperwork, not the end of it.
Before you send any money to Hungary
- Open the university's own admissions page and search it for "Bangladesh".
- Confirm in writing how many months of tuition are due before visa documents.
- Ask what happens to the extra payment if the visa is refused.
- Check whether your programme appears in the Stipendium Hungaricum list first.
- Watch shed.gov.bd from late December for the Ministry's nomination notice.
- Confirm which Hungarian mission decides your application before booking anything.
What we tell students at Eduvisa before they choose Hungary
Two questions decide it, and neither is about rankings.
First: can you realistically win a scholarship place? If your results are strong and your subject is on the list, the Stipendium route changes the economics completely, and the work is a January deadline rather than a bank transfer. It is worth one serious attempt before paying for anything.
Second: if you are going self-funded, can the family release one and a half years of tuition before a visa exists? That question, asked early, has saved families from a very painful position — money transferred, papers issued, visa refused. Ask the university in writing what its refund policy is in that scenario, and keep the reply.
What we would not do is treat Hungary as a cheap shortcut into Europe. It is a genuine EU degree at a reasonable price for the right student, with a front-loaded payment structure that punishes anyone who did not read carefully. That is exactly the kind of thing a student should hear before they commit, not after.
Verify before you act. The scholarship benefit figures and the 2026/27 deadline come from the Stipendium Hungaricum programme's published materials; the nomination and hard-copy requirement from the Bangladesh Ministry of Education's own notice dated 15 January 2026; the 1.5-year tuition rule and D-visa points from the University of Debrecen's official admissions pages. The 2027/28 dates and the New Delhi decision point are unconfirmed. Confirm every figure with the university and the relevant Hungarian mission before paying anything.
A note on how this fits Eduvisa. Hungary is a new destination for us and we are publishing research, not a service promise. If you want Hungary specifically, come and talk to us about what we can and cannot do for you today — we would rather tell you that plainly than take a file we are not ready to run.
