Something changed in Bangladesh this year that no UK visa guide has caught up with. Since 12 May 2026, every scheduled bank in the country must attach an online-verifiable QR code to any bank statement or solvency certificate issued for a visa application. The Home Office does not require it. Bangladesh Bank does. And it quietly ends a practice that has damaged Bangladeshi applicants for years.
For the 2027-28 intake you must hold £1,529 a month for London or £1,171 outside London, for up to 9 months, plus any unpaid course fees, for 28 consecutive days — and the 28-day period must end within 31 days of the date you apply. The count runs backwards from your lowest closing balance, not forwards from a deposit. Bangladesh is not on the differential evidence list, so you must supply the evidence in full.
How much money do you actually need to show?
Two components, and people routinely forget the second.
First, living costs: £1,529 per month for a course in London, £1,171 per month for a course outside London, for up to nine months. For a full year in London that is £13,761; outside London, £10,539. Those are our multiplications of GOV.UK's published monthly rates.
Second, course fees: enough to pay for one academic year, as stated on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. If you have already paid a deposit, you show the balance. Your CAS is the document that settles the number, not the university's website.
| Location | Per month | 9 months | In taka |
|---|---|---|---|
| London | £1,529 | £13,761 | ৳22.4 lakh |
| Outside London | £1,171 | £10,539 | ৳17.2 lakh |
| Course fees | As stated on your CAS | Varies | |
Taka figures are our arithmetic at £1 ≈ ৳162.77 on 29 September 2026, and they move. Budget in sterling; convert only to understand the scale.
What is the 28-day rule, exactly?
GOV.UK states it in two sentences: "You must have this money for at least 28 days in a row. The end date of the 28-day period must be within 31 days of the date you apply for your visa."
The word that does the work is lowest. The balance may not dip below the required amount on any single day of those 28 — not once, not for an afternoon, not because a standing order went out on day nineteen. Caseworkers look at the lowest closing balance in the window, and one dip resets the clock.
The second trap is the 31-day limit. Your statement's closing date must be within 31 days of the day you submit. A statement collected in good time and then sat on while you gather other documents goes stale, and a stale statement fails on a technicality rather than on the money.
Students deposit money on 1 March and apply on 29 March thinking they have satisfied the rule. They have — but only if the balance never dipped, and only if the statement's closing date is inside the 31-day window on the day of submission, not on the day it was printed. Work backwards from your intended application date: pick the submission date first, then count back 31 days for the statement, then 28 days of unbroken balance before that. Plan it as a 60-day operation, not a 28-day one.
Whose account can the money be in?
Your own account, or your parents' or legal guardian's. If it is in a parent's account, you need proof of the relationship — a birth certificate naming them — and their written permission for you to use the funds. Money in a sibling's, uncle's, family friend's or employer's account is not accepted, however genuine the arrangement.
Joint accounts are acceptable where you are one of the named holders. A business account in a family company's name is not your money for this purpose.

What must the bank statement actually show?
- Your name, or your parent's name where the funds are theirs
- The account number
- The date of the statement — within 31 days of your application
- The financial institution's name and logo
- Money available, held for the full 28 consecutive days
- Electronic statements are accepted if they carry the bank's official stamp or come with a supporting letter
Bangladesh Bank's BRPD-1 Circular No. 12, dated 12 May 2026, requires every scheduled bank to attach an online-verifiable QR code to bank statements, solvency certificates and investment certificates issued for visa applications. Scanning it must verify the Account Number, Account Name, Report Date Opening Balance, Report Date Closing Balance and Statement Generation Date, and the verification must remain live for six months. Banks were given 90 days from the circular, so this has been in force since roughly 10 August 2026. The circular is issued under section 45 of the Bank Company Act 1991.
This is good news for honest applicants, and worth understanding as such. For years, refusals of Bangladeshi files have carried the suspicion that a statement might be doctored — a suspicion that lands on everyone, including the many whose money is entirely real. A statement a caseworker can verify by scanning is a statement that defends itself. Ask your branch for the QR-coded version specifically. A bank that hands you an unmarked printout in late 2026 is giving you a weaker document than the regulator now requires it to produce.
Is Bangladesh exempt from proving funds?
No. GOV.UK maintains a "differential evidence requirement" list of nationalities that do not have to submit financial evidence with the application. Bangladesh is not on it. Your file must carry the evidence in full, first time.
That asymmetry is worth naming plainly, because it shapes how a Bangladeshi application should be prepared. An applicant from a listed country can be casual about the paperwork and usually get away with it. An applicant from Bangladesh cannot. The rule is the same; the margin for error is not.
What are the common mistakes?
- A balance that dips on one day inside the 28 — the most common single cause of refusal
- A statement older than 31 days at submission, even though it was fresh when collected
- Money in the wrong person's account — a sibling's or uncle's does not qualify
- No parental permission letter where the funds are a parent's
- A large deposit with no explanation, which invites questions the 28 days were designed to answer
- Forgetting the course-fee component and showing living costs alone
- Accepting a statement without the QR code now that Bangladesh Bank requires one
What else is on the clock for 2027?
GOV.UK states that the Graduate visa allows you to stay in the UK after completing your course for 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027. Doctoral graduates get 3 years either way. The fee is £937, and the healthcare surcharge is usually £1,035 for each year you will be in the UK — note that is the Graduate-visa rate, higher than the student rate. The Graduate visa cannot be extended, and you must be in the UK when you apply. Anyone finishing a course this autumn and eligible now should look hard at the December date.
How should you plan the timeline?
The UK sets the English requirement by course level, not by the visa: CEFR B2 for degree-level study, B1 below it. At degree level the university may assess your English itself rather than requiring a Secure English Language Test. So the honest answer to "what IELTS do I need?" is that your university decides, and some do not require a test at all. For reference, IDP's published Bangladesh prices are ৳31,100 computer-delivered and ৳34,850 for IELTS for UKVI.
Almost every UK financial refusal we are shown could have been prevented three weeks earlier, and almost none of them involve families who did not have the money. They involve a standing order nobody thought about, a statement collected too early, or a deposit from a generous uncle. The money was real. The evidence was not built backwards from the submission date. That is a planning problem, and planning is something you can still fix in September for a file you will submit in November.
Sourcing and limits. All UK figures were re-verified at GOV.UK on 29 September 2026: the monthly maintenance amounts and the 28-day and 31-day rules on the Student visa money page, the Graduate Route durations on the Student visa overview, and the £937 fee and £1,035 healthcare surcharge on the Graduate visa page. The Bangladesh Bank QR-code requirement is from BRPD-1 Circular No. 12 of 12 May 2026; the "in force since roughly 10 August 2026" date is our arithmetic on the circular's 90-day implementation period, not a date the circular states. The nine-month totals and all taka conversions are our arithmetic, the latter at £1 ≈ ৳162.77 on 29 September 2026. The IELTS prices are IDP Bangladesh's published figures and carry no date on the source. No Bangladesh Bank rule governs solvency certificates as such — their content is commercial practice, and only the QR-code requirement above is regulated. Visa application fees change and we quote none here; check GOV.UK on the day you apply.

Show us your statement before you submit, not after a refusal.
Twenty minutes with your account history tells us whether the 28 days hold, whether the closing date will still be inside 31 days when you apply, and whether your branch is issuing the QR-coded version Bangladesh Bank now requires. That is a cheap conversation. A refusal is not.
