Every October, someone walks into our office in the second week of the month holding a printout of the Chevening application form, asking whether there is still time. There usually is not. The 2027-28 round closed on a Tuesday morning at 11:00 UTC, and no amount of good intentions reopens it. That single date decides more Bangladeshi scholarship outcomes than any essay ever written.
Three main UK scholarships for Bangladeshi students in 2027 are open: Chevening (fully funded one-year master's, applications close 6 October 2026, 11:00 UTC), GREAT Scholarships (minimum £10,000 off tuition, deadline set by each university), and Commonwealth Scholarships (full fees, airfare and £1,378 per month). All three fund taught master's study, not undergraduate degrees.
What UK scholarships can a Bangladeshi student actually get in 2027?
Bangladesh is eligible for all three of the UK government's flagship schemes, and that is genuinely unusual — many countries qualify for only one. The catch is that every one of them funds postgraduate study. If you are finishing HSC and searching for a full UK undergraduate scholarship, these are not it, and any agency telling you otherwise is selling something.
The three routes are Chevening, funded by the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office; GREAT Scholarships, funded jointly by the UK government's GREAT Britain Campaign, the British Council and individual universities; and the Commonwealth Scholarships administered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK. Each has a different owner, a different deadline and a completely different definition of who deserves the money.
Chevening wants an emerging leader with a track record — it is a leadership award that happens to pay for a degree. GREAT wants a motivated postgraduate applicant at a specific university, assessed by that university. Commonwealth wants someone whose study will visibly contribute to Bangladesh's development, and who could not afford the UK otherwise.
When does Chevening 2027-28 close, and what happens after that?
Applications for 2027-28 Chevening Scholarships opened on 4 August 2026 and close at 11:00 UTC on 6 October 2026. Chevening's own timeline states plainly that the online application system cannot be accessed after that moment. Bangladesh Standard Time runs six hours ahead of UTC, so plan around a mid-afternoon cut-off in Dhaka rather than midnight — and finish days early, because the system is busiest at the end.
What follows is a long, quiet year:
- From October 2026 — applications are sifted against the eligibility criteria. Ineligible applications are rejected here, before anyone reads your essays.
- Mid-October 2026 to January 2027 — independent reading committees assess every eligible application.
- Mid-February 2027 — British embassies and high commissions produce the interview shortlist.
- March to April 2027 — interviews take place at British embassies and high commissions. All documentation must be uploaded at least seven working days before your interview.
- Mid-June 2027 — results are announced.
- 8 July 2027, 17:00 BST — the deadline to submit at least one unconditional UK university offer.
- September/October 2027 — studies begin in the UK.
That 8 July 2027 offer deadline is the step that quietly eliminates people who were already selected. An unconditional offer means every condition — including your English test — has already been met and cleared by the university. Working backwards from July, your university applications and your IELTS need to be finished long before the result arrives.
Do you actually qualify for Chevening?
Chevening publishes its criteria precisely, and the rejections are mechanical. You must be a citizen of an eligible country, commit to returning to Bangladesh for at least two years after the scholarship ends, and hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for a UK master's.
The requirement that catches most Bangladeshi applicants is work experience: at least 2,800 hours, acquired after you completed your undergraduate degree, and accumulated over a minimum of two years. Chevening's own guidance for the current cycle says this means you must have completed your undergraduate degree by October 2024 to be eligible. Full-time employment, part-time employment, voluntary work and paid or unpaid internships all count, and you may list up to fifteen separate employment periods to reach the total.

You also have to apply to three different eligible UK courses and hold an unconditional offer from at least one by the July deadline. There is no upper age limit, and already holding a master's degree does not disqualify you from applying for another.
You hold British or dual British citizenship; you are resident in the UK at the time of application; you have previously studied in the UK on a UK government-funded scholarship; or you are an employee, former employee (within the last two years) or immediate relative of an employee of a government department, the British Council, or a partner UK university. Chevening defines immediate relatives as parents or step-parents, siblings or step-siblings, children or step-children, spouse or civil partner.
How much is a GREAT Scholarship, and which universities offer it to Bangladesh?
A GREAT Scholarship is worth a minimum of £10,000 towards tuition fees — roughly ৳16.5 lakh at 19 August 2026 rates — for a one-year taught postgraduate course. It is not a living-cost scholarship and it does not cover accommodation or your visa, so you still need to prove maintenance funds for the UK Student visa exactly as any self-funding applicant would.
For the 2026-27 academic year, the British Council Bangladesh page lists seven postgraduate scholarships for Bangladeshi students at Cranfield University, Leeds Arts University, the University of Manchester, Ulster University, the University of East Anglia, the University of Glasgow and the University of Portsmouth. Interestingly, the British Council's own Study UK site lists a longer set for Bangladesh, adding Keele University and the University of Hull.
Two official British Council pages currently list different participating universities for Bangladesh. That is not a reason to distrust the scheme — it is a reason to always open the individual university's own scholarship page and confirm that Bangladesh is named, that your course is included, and what that university's own closing date is. There is no single GREAT deadline: each institution sets its own.
To be considered, you must be a passport holder and permanent resident of Bangladesh, hold an undergraduate degree, meet the university's English language requirement, and be willing to attend a networking event for UK-based GREAT scholars and act as an ambassador for the scheme afterwards. Funding is issued by the university after you register — not before, and never into a personal account beforehand.
How do Commonwealth Scholarships work for Bangladesh, and who nominates you?
This is where most guides go vague, and where the single most useful Bangladesh-specific fact lives. For the agency-nominated Commonwealth Master's Scholarships, the Commission does not accept direct applications. You must be put forward by a nominator — and for Bangladesh, the national nominating agency listed by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission is the Deputy Secretary (Scholarship), Ministry of Education, Section 19, Building No 6, Bangladesh Secretariat, Dhaka, contactable on +880 2 9545032 and [email protected], with shed.gov.bd as the published website.
That means two applications, not one: yours to the CSC's online system, and yours to the nominating agency, which runs its own selection process, may add its own criteria, and sets its own closing date. Miss the agency's timetable and a perfect CSC application goes nowhere.
There is a second route that skips the ministry entirely. Commonwealth Shared Scholarships are for candidates from lower-income Commonwealth countries and are applied for directly through CSC Central, the Commission's own system, alongside an application to one of a published list of eligible master's courses. In recent cycles that window has opened in mid-November and closed in early December, though the exact dates are announced each year.
The CSC does not require an IELTS test for its own application — though your university almost certainly will. The CSC does not charge any fee to apply through its online system, so anyone asking you for money to "process" a Commonwealth application is not to be trusted. And there is no age limit on CSC applications.
What does a Commonwealth Scholarship actually pay?
More than most people expect. The award is genuinely full — you are not liable for any part of the tuition fee, and the living allowance is set to a published rate rather than negotiated.
| Item | Value | Approx. BDT | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition fees | Paid in full | — | Confirmed |
| Airfare | Return, approved route | — | Confirmed |
| Stipend (outside London) | £1,378 / month | ৳2.28 lakh | Confirmed |
| Stipend (London area) | £1,690 / month | ৳2.79 lakh | Confirmed |
| Child allowance, 1st child | £590 / month | ৳97,600 | Single parents only |
| Warm clothing allowance | Where applicable | — | Case by case |
| MBA degrees | Not funded | — | Excluded |
Rates are those published by the Commission and quoted at current levels; BDT figures use £1 = ৳165.36 on 19 August 2026 and move daily. Child allowance applies where a scholar is widowed, divorced or a single parent, at £590 for the first child and £146 per month for the second and third child under 16, living with them in the UK.
Which scholarship should you go for?
Most strong candidates should apply for more than one, because the eligibility windows barely overlap. A 26-year-old NGO programme officer with three years of work behind her is a Chevening candidate. A fresh graduate with a first-class degree and no work history is not — but she may be a strong GREAT applicant at a specific university.
| Scheme | Covers | Work needed | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chevening | Fees, living, flights | 2,800 hrs | 6 Oct 2026 |
| GREAT | £10,000 of tuition | None stated | Set by university |
| Commonwealth Master's | Fees, living, flights | None stated | Set by ministry |
| Commonwealth Shared | Fees, living, flights | None stated | Announced yearly |
- Confirm your undergraduate completion date against the Chevening cycle cut-off before writing a single essay.
- Count your work hours honestly — weeks worked multiplied by hours per week, after graduation only.
- Shortlist three eligible UK courses, and check each one's own admission deadline.
- Get transcripts complete and scanned; a missing page makes a CSC application ineligible outright.
- Line up two or three referees early, on letterhead, in PDF.
- Contact the Ministry of Education nominating desk for the Commonwealth Master's timetable — it is not on the CSC site.
- Check each GREAT university page individually for its own closing date.
- Book your IELTS in time for an unconditional offer, not just a conditional one.
What quietly costs Bangladeshi applicants these scholarships?
What we see at Eduvisa is rarely a weak candidate. It is a strong candidate who ran out of runway. The commonest pattern is someone who starts thinking about Chevening in September, has no university applications in yet, and therefore has no realistic path to an unconditional offer by the following July. The second commonest is a Commonwealth applicant who assumed the CSC deadline was the only deadline and never contacted the nominating agency at all.
Then there are the avoidable technicalities — transcripts uploaded without every page, references sent by email instead of uploaded as PDFs to the system, work experience counted from before graduation. None of these are judgement calls. They are checklist failures, and a checklist is exactly the kind of thing worth going through with someone who has watched these cycles before.
Verify before you act. Every date and figure above was taken from chevening.org, britishcouncil.org.bd, study-uk.britishcouncil.org and cscuk.fcdo.gov.uk on 19 August 2026. Scholarship rules, stipend rates and participating universities change between cycles, and some CSC pages still carry text from earlier rounds. The GREAT 2027-28 university list for Bangladesh had not yet been published when this guide was written — universities were still bidding to join the scheme. Always confirm on the official page before you rely on anything here.
