The graduation photos are taken, the thesis is bound, and the permesso di soggiorno in your drawer has four months left on it. This is the moment when most Bangladeshi families ask the question nobody prepared them for: what now? Italy does not hand you a two-year "graduate route" the way the UK does — but it does give you a legal window to stay and look for work, and since 2023 the door to converting your student status into a work permit has been open all year round, with no quota to fight over.
Yes — Bangladeshi students can stay in Italy after graduating. You apply for a permesso di soggiorno per attesa occupazione (job-search residence permit), issued for not less than 9 and not more than 12 months under D.Lgs. 71/2018. Alternatively, if you already have a job offer of more than 20 hours a week, you can convert your student permit directly into a work permit — since the 2023 Cutro Decree this conversion is outside the Decreto Flussi quota and can be filed at any time of year.
What exactly is Italy's post study work permit for Bangladeshi students?
It is called the permesso di soggiorno per attesa occupazione — literally, a residence permit "awaiting employment". Introduced for graduates by Legislative Decree 71/2018, it lets a non-EU student who has completed a qualification in Italy stay on legally to look for a job or start a business, instead of leaving the country the day the study permit expires.
Two things about it surprise most Bangladeshi families. First, it is not a visa you apply for from Dhaka — it is applied for inside Italy, before your student permit runs out. Second, it is not automatic. Nobody posts it to you when you graduate. You have to register yourself as available for work and file the application yourself, and if you miss the window you lose the right.
The Italian government's own integration portal, run jointly by the Ministry of Labour, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Education, states the qualifying titles plainly: a dottorato or university master's, a three-year laurea triennale, a laurea specialistica/magistrale, a first- or second-level academic diploma, or a higher technical diploma. The permit must be used to look for work "coherent with the completed course of study".
How long can you stay in Italy after graduation — 9 months or 12?
Both numbers are correct, and this is where almost every study-abroad blog gets it wrong. The law sets a range, not a fixed term: the permit has a duration "not less than 9 months and not more than 12 months". Many websites simply write "12 months" as if it were guaranteed. It is not — the Questura decides where in that band your permit falls.
Plan your job hunt around nine months, and treat anything beyond that as a bonus. In practice this means starting applications in your final semester, not after your graduation ceremony.
You must apply before your study permit expires. Registering at the Centro per l'Impiego (the local employment centre) and making the dichiarazione di immediata disponibilità — the DID — is a prerequisite, and it takes time to get an appointment. Italy's Council of State ruled in November 2021 that a late conversion application is not automatically fatal, but that is a court remedy, not a plan. Do not build your future on an appeal.
Who qualifies for the permesso per attesa occupazione?
You qualify if you completed one of the recognised Italian qualifications listed above, your study permit is still valid, and you register as unemployed and available for work. The practical checklist looks like this:
- A degree, master's or doctorate actually conferred by an Italian institution — enrolment alone is not enough
- A study residence permit that has not yet expired on the day you file
- Registration at the Centro per l'Impiego, with the DID declaration made in person
- Valid health insurance covering you for the period of the new permit
- A valid passport, and proof you can support yourself while you search
- Evidence that the work you are seeking is coherent with what you studied
How do you apply for the job-search permit step by step?
The process is entirely paper-and-appointment based, and it runs through the Italian post office rather than an online portal. Here is the sequence, drawn from the public-administration guidance published by the Tuscany region's PAeSI immigration portal in partnership with the Prefecture of Florence.
Register at the Centro per l'Impiego
Go to the employment centre for the city where you live and make the DID — the declaration of immediate availability for work. Keep the receipt; you will need both a copy and the original.
Collect the postal kit
Pick up the residence-permit kit at a post office counter marked Sportello Amico. It contains the envelope, the application form and the pre-filled payment slips.
Assemble your documents
A €16 tax stamp (marca da bollo), photocopies of the pages of your passport carrying photos, visas and stamps, the Centro per l'Impiego receipt, your degree certificate from the university, and the payment receipt for the residence-permit contribution.
File at the post office
Submit the envelope. The counter gives you a postal receipt and your first Questura appointment date. That receipt is your proof of legal stay while the application is processed — do not lose it.
Attend the Questura
Bring four passport photographs and the original Centro per l'Impiego registration, and give your fingerprints.
Collect the permit
The Questura sends an SMS when the card is ready. You can track progress on the State Police portal for foreign nationals.
Can you convert your student permit straight into a work permit?
Yes — and for Bangladeshi graduates this is often the better route. Until 2023, converting a study permit into a work permit meant competing for a slice of the annual Decreto Flussi quota, with its notorious click-days. The Cutro Decree (Decreto-Legge 20 of 10 March 2023, converted into Law 50 of 5 May 2023) deleted that requirement. The government's integration portal states it directly: such permits, provided they are still valid, can now be converted at any moment of the year and without numerical limits.
Two more details that matter and that generic international guides skip:
- For university permits — laurea, master's or doctorate — you can file the conversion request even before you finish your course. For permits issued for vocational training or an internship, you must wait until the course or traineeship ends.
- The job offer attached to the application must be for more than 20 hours a week. A 15-hour café contract will not convert your status, however genuine it is.
Applications are filed electronically through the Ministry of the Interior's ALI portal to the Sportello Unico of your province. Graduates of Italian institutions use a specific form — modello V2 for employment, modello Z2 for self-employment — rather than the general VA and Z forms. Using the wrong form is a common and avoidable delay.
Every guide tells you a study permit allows 20 hours of work a week. Fewer mention the second half of the rule: those hours are cumulative across 52 weeks with a firm annual ceiling of 1,040 hours. Busy summer weeks borrow from quiet exam months — but the year-total is what an inspector counts. And once you have filed for the attesa occupazione permit and your employer has lodged the Unilav notification, the 20-hour weekly limit no longer applies to you.
What does the post-study permit cost in euro and taka?
Less than most families budget for — and there is a genuine saving that surprises people. The residence-permit contributo is €40 for permits of more than three months up to one year, and €50 for permits of more than one and up to three years. But the same official schedule states the contributo is not payable for a duplicate, an update, or the conversion of a valid residence permit.
| Item | Cost | In BDT* |
|---|---|---|
| Contributo (3–12 months) | €40 | ৳5,709 |
| Contributo (1–3 years) | €50 | ৳7,136 |
| Electronic permit card | €30.46 | ৳4,347 |
| Marca da bollo (tax stamp) | €16 | ৳2,283 |
| Registered postal submission | ≈€30 | ≈৳4,282 |
| Contributo on a conversion | Not payable | ৳0 |
*Converted at €1 ≈ ৳142.72, the mid-market rate on 23 August 2026. Rates move daily — treat the taka column as indicative only.
The contributo amounts come from a public-administration schedule last updated in June 2017, reflecting the 2017 inter-ministerial decree. The €30 postal figure is an estimate, not an official tariff. Confirm current totals at the post office or Questura before paying, and never rely on a blog — including this one — for the exact figure on the day.
Which route should you choose — job search or conversion?
If you have a signed offer in hand, convert. If you do not, take the job-search permit and convert later. The two are not rivals; they are sequential.
| Point | Job search | Conversion |
|---|---|---|
| Job offer needed | No | Yes, over 20 hrs/week |
| Length | 9–12 months | Tied to contract |
| Quota | None | None since 2023 |
| Where filed | Post office kit | ALI portal, then kit |
| Form | Postal kit form | V2 or Z2 |
| Contributo | Verify locally | Not payable |
What mistakes cost Bangladeshi graduates their right to stay?
What we see at Eduvisa, again and again, is not a documentation problem — it is a calendar problem. Students spend their final semester finishing a thesis and only look up when the permit has weeks left. By then the Centro per l'Impiego appointment queue alone can eat the remaining time.
The other recurring pattern is the informal job. A graduate takes cash-in-hand work while waiting, has no Unilav filed, no contract, no payslips — and then has nothing to show when the conversion application asks for a contract proposal with the employer's CCNL level, weekly hours and place of work. Undocumented work does not just fail to help your file; it actively damages it.
First, book the Centro per l'Impiego appointment as soon as your defence date is fixed — you can go the moment your degree is conferred. Second, ask any prospective employer, early, whether they are willing to issue a written contract proposal of more than 20 hours a week. Employers who hesitate on that question will hesitate again later, when it is too late for you to find another.
What happens after you find a job, and is permanent residence possible?
Once your employer's offer is accepted by the Sportello Unico, a nulla osta for employment is issued, and the worker and employer sign the contratto di soggiorno digitally through the ALI portal — no physical visit is required for that step. You then complete the permit change with the postal kit, exactly as before.
Beyond that lies the EU long-term residence permit, for which the official contributo schedule sets a €100 fee — evidence the route exists, though the eligibility conditions, residence period and income and language requirements are a separate legal test we have deliberately not summarised here.
Immigration rules change with each government and each Decreto Flussi cycle. Everything above was checked against Italian government sources on 23 August 2026, but permit durations, thresholds and forms can be amended without notice. Verify with the Questura, the Sportello Unico or your university's international office before you act — and if your case has any complication, such as an expired permit or a gap in enrolment, get advice before filing anything.
